At the westernmost point of Grand Bahama, a village of connected pavilions sits between a deep water canal and the seemingly endless sweep of the Atlantic. This home, located in an area known for historic hurricanes, is raised above sea level on a podium to protect from tidal surges.
Standing at the home's facade, Nandana's roots in Southeast Asian forms are immediately apparent, with palm trees and tropical plants framing gabled roofs that tier down in successive layers. Copper oxidized to a pale green patina from sea breezes contrasts with the warmth of wood.
One enters through 250-year-old carved teak doors salvaged from a Javanese temple into a large gathering area for living and dining. Teak wood characterizes the floors and walls, with columns drawing the eye upward to the space's lofty wool-paneled ceilings. Just outside, shaded lounge pavilions and primary suites are organized around a pool that lightly outlines these spaces, creating an air of seclusion. At this private villa retreat just steps from the beach, each detail is devised to shape an experience of beauty at every turn.
