Sea Bluff Ranch

North Shore Preserve, Kaua’i
On a bluff on Kaua'i's north shore, a contemporary ranch home lives between “mauka,” or the mountains, and "makai," the sea down below. Here, on land once home to the island's historic estate ranches, the lush, eroded peaks for which the island is known provide a backdrop to architecture that honors the simple gable roofs and intimate scale of its predecessors.
Natural wood and stone live in harmonious dialogue with tropical plantings, while metal roofs shed rain from the island's frequent downpours. With expansive glass walls on either side, the home's main gathering space holds the tension of two topographies, giving equal stage to mountain and ocean views.
